Here is a pattern, called Venice, to get you started!  Remember, when using monk's cloth, zigzag the raw edges, and then wash monk's cloth before stitching.   It takes 2 1/2 yards of monk's cloth for a couch throw.
This pattern may also be stitched with embroidery floss on aida cloth by picking up the threads instead of stitching into the holes as with cross stitch.  You can also stitch it on huck toweling, huck cloth or other even-weave materials.
If you have a problem printing this pattern, please  e-mail us your mailing address and we will gladly mail you a copy.

        Happy stitching!

Please click here for more instructions. The pattern rows are numbered with number one on the top.   Fold the piece of monk's cloth in fourths to find the center float.  Mark this float with a safety pin or bright contrasting yarn.
To measure the yarn for row 1:  Lay out the fabric.  Measure the yarn across the fabric.  This is one length.  Holding this mark measure an additional length. Holding the second mark measure 8 more inches.  Cut.
Row 1-             2 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 2 -            2 3/4 lengths plus 8 inches
Rows 3, 4, 5 -  1 1/2 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 6 -            3 lengths plus 8 inches
Rows 7, 8, 9 -  1 1/2 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 10 -          2 3/4 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 11 -          2 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 12 -          2 lengths plus 8 inches
Row 13 -          2 lengths plus 8 inches
Begin stitching in the center of the fabric. You already marked the center.   Make the first stitch to the left of the center float.  Pull the yarn so that half of the yarn lays on each side of this stitch.  You will use half of the yarn to stitch the pattern across the row to the edge of the fabric.  Count down four rows.  Stitch a float.  Stitch 6 more floats.  * Count down four rows and stitch two floats.  Count up 4 rows and stitch 7 floats.  Count up 4 rows and stitch two floats.  Count down 4 rows and stitch 7 floats.  Repeat from * across row.  At the end of the row, push the needle through the fabric and remove from the yarn.  Turn fabric around and rethread needle.  Stitch the rest of the row 1.    Beginning with row 1, stitch rows 1 - 13.  Continue until you have enough room left for your fringe ending at either row 2, 9 or 13.   Turn material around.  Beginning with row 13, stitch rows 13 - 1.
The 13 rows in this pattern measure 7 3/4 inches. The design repeats every 3 inches. Row 1 is designed to fit right into row 13.  It is easier to stitch row 6, and then stitch rows 5 and 7 around row 6.  After stitching, you can finish edges by fringing the ends and sewing the sides.  To do this:  Zig zag a couple of rows from the last stitched row.   Cut material 4-24 rows away from this zig zagging.  Remove threads for fringe.  Fold over the selvage sides and stitch down.
